Choosing excitement > fear, & how to actually stay sane as a PM.

SIX! From a cold, but sunny UK 😅☀️

Life lessons, Product & the Podcast.

This week I worked from 6 different countries 🤯

Switzerland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, & now the UK! It's been a whirlwind. Hence the Sunday post of this newsletter instead of Friday.

I absolutely loved it though. So much time to think, be inspired and appreciate everything. This week I'll share where my head is at!

Life Lessons

Have you ever sat on things, for a long time, because you’re in your comfort zone and don't want to step out of it?

That’s exactly how the last few months have gone in my business.

Don't get me wrong. I've started a bunch of things:

  • This newsletter
  • A podcast
  • Writing
  • Speaking

But I haven’t really focussed on making anything new take off. I haven’t needed to. I’ve been working with a couple of consultancy clients - in my comfort zone - allowing them to grow product practises and launch amazing new experiences.

My consultancy work wrapped up at the end of last month, and do you know what? That was exactly the kick up the arse that I needed to really make something happen with the other projects that I’ve been thinking about.

I heard from others about the frustrating periods with no client work, not being sure where your next pay check will come from. Don’t get me wrong - maybe I’ll hit that point if I don’t have my diary jam packed with client work in a months time, but right now my feeling is relief and motivation.

I knew this is what I really needed. I needed to have the time, and the motivation to try some new things. & I feel excited for it.

I’m not saying that it is always easy to be in this position, but I really do believe that we can look at everything in life from at least two lenses.

Either with fear and panic that nothing will work out, or with excitement and positivity around all of the amazing things that we could make happen if we let ourselves try.

There’s a fine line between the two, but right now I am feeling grateful for everything I have achieved so far, and I can’t wait to see what is around the corner.

& sometimes we just need to be pushed out of our comfort zone to make the magic happen.

I’ll keep you posted on which mindset wins and gets the results for me over the next few months ;)

PS. On that note, I'm running a Product Management coaching programme - 4 weeks for you to really get clear on what you want to gain from your PM career and make that happen. & I can't wait to support some incredible Product people on their journey.

Obviously I'm still running my consulting for growing Product Maturity & becoming outcome driven organisations, and Product Leader 1:1 coaching is still open!

If you know of anyone that would love some support in these spaces, drop me a note!

Product Lessons

Avoiding burnout in your PM career.

Last week I had 5 intro calls with PMs looking for coaching. For every single one of them, there aim was to step into a new role & be able to absolutely smash it.

Often, when looking at this - we only focus on how to execute on the skill that we need to perform. Whilst that is extremely important, and I offer everyone that I coach a bunch of practical tips and tools to achieve this, it is also so important to be clear on your goals, and values to make sure you're focussing on the right areas.

To really grow your career, and make it sustainable. It is not just about becoming amazing in different areas, but it is also about focussing on the areas that you love and feel passionate about.

42.1% of tech workers have a high risk of burnout, and 62% feel emotionally and physically drained. In our podcast, we also saw this as a common theme that PMs have experienced. We all push ourselves too far, trying to achieve everything and impress - and then we realise that our career isn't serving us.

I've learnt that it really doesn't have to be this way. Yes, being a PM will always be a challenging role - that's part of the fun!

But you can build your career in a way where you learn your own values, your strengths and how to set boundaries to allow you to focus on the areas that will really help you to succeed.

& I'm here to help you to do just that. I'm taking everything I've learnt from my own career and from those that I've coached, to teach you how to carve out a career that you truly love and can sustain.

If you know of anyone that could benefit from this, I would truly love it if I could help them - so please spread the word!

The Podcast

This week we were joined by Andy Walsh, who grew his career to become a Product Leader at DfE, before choosing to move back into a hands-on Product role.

Andy is an incredible example of assessing his passions, strengths and values and making a career move to better serve him.

We discuss the joys and complexities of moving through different roles, how to lead teams, and why he chose to switch up his career again.

Have an incredible start to the week 🙌🏽

I'm definitely looking forward to moving some projects into action!

Idk about you Reader, but I had the craziest summer (and not always in a good way..) My closest point to a meltdown was in August.. I was fixing furniture in my flat until 10pm (f*ck knows what my tenant did in there), getting the 5.30am train to run a client workshop in London & then flying straight to Berlin. It was intense. I'm not really sure how I made it all happen. Product Management often looks like this. A rollercoaster of planning, launches, fires to fight, targets that are falling...

How often do you step out of your comfort zone ? When I was working 9-5, I actually didn't step out of my comfort zone very often. Maybe I'd do the odd presentation that would scare me, or have the odd meeting with the CEO - but it all started to feel kinda normal. The truth is, that most of the time we only make change when things get that bad. We don't make changes based on the potential of how good it could get to be (I mean think about that average relationship that you stayed in for far...

Reader did you know that the average salary increase when stepping in to product leadership is 26%?! It's one of the most lucrative career moves that you could make. Stepping in to product leadership is one of the best career moves you can make. More time to spend on strategy, actually getting to lead & inspire teams and really driving the direction of a company. But... many struggle with confidence, imposter syndrome, and knowing how to lead and inspire others. & don't even get me started on...
